The AV Hall at L.V. Prasad College of Media Studies, Chennai, was abuzz with cinematic enthusiasm as renowned cinematographer M.S. Prabhu conducted a two-day masterclass on “Imagery – Latent & Overt” on the 25th and 26th of February. Organized by the PG Department of Cinematography and coordinated by Mr. S. K. Bhoopathy, HOD of the department, the event brought together students from various streams to participate and gain knowledge.
M.S. Prabhu, widely celebrated for his visual mastery in films like Mahanadhi, Ayan, Neethaane En Ponvasantham, and Kaappaan, began his career under the mentorship of the legendary P.C. Sreeram. With decades of experience across Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema, Prabhu shared invaluable lessons drawn from his rich journey in both celluloid and digital filmmaking.
The masterclass delved deep into the evolution of cinematography — from analog celluloid to contemporary digital technologies. He emphasized the critical role of the exposure meter and explained its continued relevance in modern digital workflows. The sessions were a blend of theory and practical insights, covering everything from basic lighting techniques to advanced digital cinematography styles.
A key highlight was Prabhu’s reflection on how foundational principles from the celluloid era still influence current digital practices. He underscored the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in a rapidly evolving industry. His message to budding cinematographers was clear: embrace new technology, but never lose sight of classical filmmaking techniques.
Students left the session inspired, with a renewed appreciation for the craft and a deeper understanding of the latent and overt aspects of cinematic imagery.
